Five dawns, a hundred balloons, and valleys older than memory.

Overview

Commissioned as a slow-travel feature, we spent five days in the valleys — cave hotels, sunrise viewpoints, artisan workshops — documenting the region beyond the postcard: the pilots, the bakers, the dawn crews who inflate a hundred balloons before most travellers wake.

The challenge

Balloon flights cancel on wind, viewpoints crowd by 5 a.m., and the famous light lasts twenty minutes. We worked with a local fixer, scouted three backup ridges, and shot the human story on no-fly days so no dawn went to waste.

Approach & solution

Wide environmental frames carry the landscape; tight portraits carry the people. The diary ran as a ten-page feature with a fold-out panorama, and the sunrise balloon frame became our second best-selling print.

  • Ten-page feature with fold-out panorama.
  • 150-frame captioned kit for web and social.
  • Vertical cut-downs for reels and stories.
