Old Town Streets

Forty strangers, two evenings, one old town at golden hour.

Overview

A self-initiated weekend series: we walked the old town with one camera, one lens and printed permissions slips, asking strangers — shopkeepers, skaters, grandmothers, night-shift bakers — for ninety seconds of their evening.

The challenge

Street portraiture is ninety percent trust. Harsh midday light, busy backgrounds and shy subjects all fight the frame. We shot only in the last two hours of daylight, carried a collapsible backdrop for clean backgrounds, and gave every sitter a free print.

Approach & solution

Forty portraits in two evenings, edited overnight and exhibited as a pop-up show in a local café the following weekend — where half the subjects came to see themselves on the wall. The series now opens every portrait consultation we hold.

  • 40 environmental portraits, two golden-hour sessions.
  • Pop-up exhibition attended by the subjects.
  • Every sitter received a free archival print.
